Quality marks
Quality marks for wood provide guarantees about forest management, or refer to the wood product itself. Aspects such as the way in which it has been treated to give it a longer life. Or, for instance, encouraging sustainable forest management, like FSC and PEFC. Keurhout-Duurzaam (Approved Sustainable Wood) is a label given by the Vereniging Van Nederlandse Houtondernemingen (VVNH, the Association of Dutch Wood Companies). An independent board of experts assesses the certificates and quality marks of wood production, not the wood itself. The quality mark functions as a gate-keeper: only the labels that provide a sufficient guarantee that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests can obtain the Keurhout Duurzaam logo and enter the Dutch market. Independent bodies perform the actual checking of the entire chain, from tree to product.
PEFC
PEFC, which was founded in 1999, is an international non-profit organisation with the objective of sustainable global management of forests. The abbreviation stands for 'Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes'. Sustainable forest management means that the economic, ecological and social functions of forests are taken into account.
